The Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA) and the resulting Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR) have revamped our system for monitoring and controlling food safety. Before the SFCA and SFCR came into effect on January 15, only a few foods, including meat, dairy products, and maple syrup, were regulated by a federal food safety monitoring and surveillance system. From now on, all foods to be sold across provincial and national borders will be under the jurisdiction of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).
